If you've never heard of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), you're not alone. But you're missing out on one of the gentlest, most restorative therapies your body can receive. Unlike the deep pressure of a traditional massage, MLD uses light, rhythmic, sweeping strokes that follow the natural pathways of your lymphatic system. The touch is so soft it almost feels like nothing is happening, until you notice that the puffiness around your eyes is gone, your stuffy sinuses have cleared, and you're sleeping more deeply than you have in weeks.

Your lymphatic system is your body's internal cleanup crew. It moves fluid, immune cells, and waste away from your tissues and back into circulation. Unlike your blood, lymph has no pump and it relies on movement, breath, and muscle contraction to keep flowing. When it slows down or backs up, you feel it: swelling, sluggishness, brain fog, recurring colds, breakouts, heaviness in the limbs.

MLD gives that system a gentle nudge. By stimulating the lymph nodes and guiding fluid along its proper routes, a trained therapist can help your body decongest, detoxify, and reset.

MLD has a long, well-documented track record for post-surgical swelling and lymphedema, and it's often prescribed after procedures like mastectomy or orthopedic surgery to speed healing and reduce bruising. Beyond clinical use, people turn to it for chronic sinus congestion and allergies, water retention and bloating, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, post-viral recovery (including long COVID), acne and dull skin, anxiety and poor sleep, and that vague but persistent feeling of being "off."

If you've been feeling puffy, run-down, foggy, or simply curious about a gentler kind of bodywork, this is the season to try it. Your lymph will thank you.

Andrea is offering MLD sessions at our Pearl District office on Thursday mornings. Call us at (503) 719-5335 to schedule with her.
