I attended this informative gathering of dedicated individuals and institutions in support of children's education, well-being, and opportunity. It was organized by the ever-hardworking, sensible Maxine Dexter. The panelists were caring and strong in their beliefs, each citing facts to support their point of view. They all agreed that each of us needs to care about not only our own children and neighbors but for all children in every neighborhood in Portland. Our city can be better. The major message was that each of us can help make changes for healthier, happier future for Portland and beyond but only if we speak up and take actions within our communities. Everyone has connections and knowledge...use them for good. Don't feel helpless but listen to different points of views, learn, be open, help to make Portland a better city and world a better place for all children.
The gallery and I have supported a number of the groups that were in attendance: Friendly House, NAYA, Friends of Seasonal Workers, Transitions Projects, and others. They do so much with so little!
The second photo is of Valerie Schiller, a truly dedicated teacher newly elected to OEA. She clearly knows that each student is an individual and needs to be seen, encouraged, and educated in a way they can be their best.
Peace to all.

Look what Danielle Knapp brought us!
She is curator of Art at JSMOA at UofO.
Beautiful new book James Lavadour: Land of Origin presents the most comprehensive survey to date of works by painter and printmaker James Lavadour (Walla Walla). Spanning five decades of work, this national retrospective celebrates Lavadour’s deep connection to the eastern Oregon landscape, particularly the Umatilla Indian Reservation and surrounding Blue Mountains region where the artist has spent most of his life, and recognizes his esteemed place in contemporary American painting.
The exhibition and catalogue includes nearly thirty of Lavadour’s magnificent signature grid paintings, works on individual panels, and prints, most of which have never been exhibited together. The catalogue includes essays by exhibition curator and JSMA McCosh Curator Danielle Knapp and guest writers Meagan Atiyeh, Rebecca Dobkins, and Marie Watt; an interview with Lavadour and former JSMA Executive Director John Weber; a fully illustrated checklist with additional images of representative works; and a comprehensive artist’s CV.
