My first thought on Tuesday was “I won’t have enough candles.”
It’s true; I don’t have twenty one candles.
I have no way to speak to this.
I have to speak to this.

Nineteen babies.
Two guardians.

Reminding myself.
Reminding us all.

Even though my mom didn’t live to see me in the role of “mom”… she made me a mother.
Every nurturer and guardian and caretaker made me a mother.
Every failed visit to the fertility specialist made me a mother.
The siblings we fostered made me a mother.
The baby we spent a week in the NICU with only to send him home with a bio grandmother, made me a mother.
Every “almost” placement and heartbreaking phone call made me a mother.
Every day and step forward through grief and love made me a mother.
I was a mother long before my child came to us and I am grateful for him and every other person and experience who made me ready to claim him.
Motherhood does not look just one way.
