Flower People

Sweet pea planting is in full swing on the farm đą The goal is to get the rest of the plants out by the end of this week (much later than I originally planned, but farming depends on the weather đ
).
I canât wait to see them bloom again đ¸ Soon weâll be tying up the rows each week and fertilizing.
Theyâre a lot of work, but so worth it!
Fingers crossed for a good seed season đ¤â¨

Taking in a deep breath of spring air đŽâđ¨ weâve mostly made it thru the rainy season and I couldnât be happier. đ I love to forage around our property to find little bits and pieces to add to bouquets. This one features tulips, anemones, horsetail grass and alder tree branches. đ
Dahlias can be a lot⌠especially when youâre growing them for tuber production.
Planting, digging, washing, dividing, storing, inspecting, packagingâŚ
And weâve had our fair share of things go wrong. Rot, voles, weeds⌠you name it.
And weâre re-doing our field again đ
But I wonât quit.
Theyâre just too beautiful. I canât give them up.
âźď¸ If youâre growing dahlias this year, here are a few things that make a big difference:
⢠Good drainage is everything. They wonât do well sitting in wet soil⢠Focus on building healthy soil (weâre still working on this too)⢠Feed with nitrogen early on to grow strong plants before they start flowering⢠Once they start budding, ease off nitrogen so energy goes into flowers⢠Water deeply once plants are actively growing â shallow watering wonât reach the tubers⢠Dig them up for winter in zones 6 and colder (some people get away with deep mulch and tarps, but itâs a risk)
đ Iâll have dahlia tubers available March 21 (this Saturday! )
And save this if youâre growing dahlias this year đ¸
