Just stumbled across these photos I’ve never seen before from my first semester of grad school at OCAC in my little corner studio. This is the little corner where the Feminist Potter was born, where I sat for hundreds of hours at the wheel touching clay and thinking about what kind of teacher I wanted to become, where I struggled and failed and cried and laughed and thought and sang and lived.
In the background, you can see all the local clay and I had just dug up drying out on my carts, my rock collection and my ever-growing radical pedagogy book stack hanging out on my work bench, the box of weird found tools I was attempting to throw with, the inspirational photos of Frida, my grandma, and the on my wall, and that beautiful brown clay on my wheel.
It was a precious gift to have that dedicated time of growth and learning and exploration with nurturing mentors like .gloss and enthusiastic classmates like .christina .crocetto .coffield .moon .gerigscott .paint and so many more that I continue to learn so much from.
I’ve been grieving the loss of my alma mater along with the rest of the OCAC community this week as they close their doors after over 100 years of shaping the minds, hands, and lives of thousands upon thousands of craftspeople. The loss to craft is profound. I can only hope OCAC will go down in history as the radical educational community of craftspeople that it was, one of the many hearts and minds of American craft, in the same vein as it’s not-so-distant sister Black Mountain Collage.
