Tonight’s read: Thoughts on "The Homeless Problem" presented by co-founder Bryan Kim
"We do not come up with the right answers to our problem because we seldom ask ourselves the right question. There is no Negro problem in America; there has never been a Negro problem in America -- the problem of race in America is a white problem. To understand that problem and to control it, we must address ourselves to the fears and frailties of white people. We learn nothing from a study of Harlem. To understand Harlem, we must go not to Harlem but to the conscience of "good white people"; we must not ask what is Harlem, but what have you made of Harlem? Why did you create it and why do you need it?" -- Lerone Bennett, Confrontation: Black and White (1966)
Analogously: There is no "homeless problem" in Portland; there has never been a homeless problem in Portland -- the problem of housing in Portland is a housed problem. We learn nothing from a study of "the homeless." To understand the houseless, we must go not to them, but to the conscience of the "good white liberals"; we must not ask what is homelessness, but what have you made of the homeless? Why did you create them and why do you need them?

Tomorrow! Come help clean our community! Team up with housed and unhoused community members to clean up a local camp. The city fails to give folks living outside the resources or support needed to keep their spaces clean. This is where we as community members can step up! We all benefit when our communities and neighbors can live cleaner and safer.

‼️Tomorrow ‼️Join us for an education event around the radical legacy of the historical Jesus of Nazareth, and what we can learn from his anti-imperial, non-violent movement!
Philosopher Slavoj Zizek says that religion and spirituality are like empty vases that can be filled with any class or political content -- this is how the words of an anti-Roman, anti-imperial preacher of egalitarian commensality have been used in defense of American capitalism and American Empire. In this talk, we will work to reconstruct and uncover the the real teachings of Jesus around 1) Wealth, 2) Family, and 3) what "The Kingdom of God on Earth" really means.
This event will be held on Zoom and you can sign up for free on our meetup group (linktree)!

Patrons like you make our community work possible! From building warming huts and emergency shelters, to creating paid opportunities for houseless folks, grassroots donations allow us to build a better world. We're entirely funded by the People for the People. We don't take any large corporate or government money. Donating to our p@tre0n is one of the best ways you can support our work! As they say, "for a cup of coffee a day," you can directly help people in your community. Link in bio!
