Today, many of us gather with family and friends to celebrate our nation’s independence. It’s a day filled with barbecues, parades, and fireworks.

But for many survivors of trauma, especially survivors of sexual violence, the loud booms and unexpected noises can trigger fear, anxiety, and painful memories. What feels like celebration for one person may feel overwhelming for another.

As we celebrate, let’s also practice compassion. Remember that everyone experiences holidays differently. Extend grace, check in on those you love, and meet people where they are, without judgment.

Whether you’re celebrating with fireworks, choosing a quiet evening at home, or simply getting through the day, your experience is valid.
