On Sunday we showcased treasures from our Archives during our Free Public Day to celebrate the Museum's recent restoration, thanks in part to grants from the Town of Plymouth Community Preservation Fund and the Cultural Facilities Fund from MassDevelopment and the Mass Cultural Council. 🎉

Curator Anne Mason invited visitors to take an up-close-and-personal look at documents from the Revolutionary period, including a letter from James Warren (1726-1808). Warren, whose Plymouth home still stands at the corner of North and Main Streets, served as President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress from 1775 to 1780 and as the first Paymaster General of the Continental Army between July 1775 and April 1776.

In a letter dated October 14, 1775, Warren informed his friend William Watson (1730-1815) of the visit of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Lynch, and Benjamin Harrison to General Washington’s headquarters. The Continental Congress in Philadelphia had appointed these three men to review Washington’s military preparations. "You may depend upon it the whole Continent grows more & more serious & determined every day," Warren wrote. "They will soon take steps that will make England totter" and the world will “see whether a Righteous Cause by the favour of Providence don’t prevail over Injustice & Cruelty.”
