Did you know that during the Middle Ages, garnet gemstones were used as a remedy for the plague? Named after a pomegranate seed due to its color and shape, this gem was believed to warn its owner of approaching danger and trouble by changing its color.
What are some of the most common enhancements that gemstones receive? Heat treatments to improve or change color, fill to smooth the outer surface of the stone or to stabilize inner inclusions, irradiation to change gemstone color, and wax coatings to improve the finish of the gemstone.
A piece of jewelry may have many different values, depending on the purpose of your appraisal. For example, the replacement value would be different than the fair market value. There is also liquidation value, market comparison, damage assessment, and hypothetical appraisals for loss of undocumented items.
Many things are considered when appraising gemstones. It will be noted whether it is a natural or synthetic gem, and we will also check for any gemstone enhancements. Enhancements include fracture filling, heat treatment, glass infilling, deep diffusion treatment, coating, irradiation, paraffin coating, and dye.
While some merchants may offer you a free appraisal with your jewelry purchase, it’s generally recommended that you get a second opinion. This way, you will get an in-depth, unbiased, accurate appraisal.
