10,000 to 20,000 years ago, a star 20 times bigger than our Sun exploded. That Super Nova still has remnants in our night sky. This is an image taken with a special telescope/camera from Pittsburgh last night that shows part of it. This is called the Western Veil Nebula.

It's a vast, expanding cloud of ionized gas and dust, and is part of a larger structure called the Cygnus Loop. The nebula is visible in telescopes as several distinct parts, including the Western Veil (Witch's Broom Nebula) and the Eastern Veil, and its colors in photos come from different elements like oxygen (blue) and hydrogen (red).
