Plant Timing, Spacing, and Companions Workshop
Saturday, June 6 from 1 - 230p at GCF (allotment garden and farm production spaces)

Learn when to plant your vegetables and herbs, how to space them, and what plants have positive relationships with each other (companion plants) to enhance plant production, reduce pests, and increase soil health. Attendees will receive a flower companion plant and seeds to take home. Plan on getting into the dirt during this workshop!

This is a FREE, family-friendly workshop. Registration isn’t required but encouraged.

This workshop is part of our Gardening Basics Workshop series and one of the ways we support the Garfield Grows Network (GGN), a free informal learning and support network for Garfield growers of all ages and experience levels. For their capstone project to complete our Environmental Justice curriculum, the fab youth of chose to build a salamander habitat for the salamanders that live in the “dirt pit” in the front yard of their building. It was so much fun!!

We invited local naturalist and salamander enthusiast Joe to teach us about salamanders and help us construct a habitat for them. After teaching us about the salamanders the youth found in the yard, we all collected sticks and logs and rocks and leaves to construct the habitat.

After the habitat was completed, we installed an educational sign so that the youth and any other people who pass by can learn about salamanders and how to keep them safe. Very cool note: the salamanders on the sign were colored by the students 🦎

This was such a great example of an Environmental Justice project, bringing together discovery, appreciation, mobilization, and education!!
