I first met Malachi Delorenzo when he was in his mother’s belly. I was photographing the Violent Femmes in Milwaukee. It was my first assignment for . I was only getting paid $75, so was staying with the drummer, Victor Delorenzo - Victor’s wife Karen was Malachi’s mom.

Years later I met up with a 20 year old Malachi playing downtown in NYC. He came to work for me making playlists for my shoots. He then hooked up with Langhorne Slim who he produced and played drums for. Also when Langhorne called out, “And if it’s true” - Malachi would scream, “IT’S TRUE!” from behind his kit. Stephie and I followed them touring around the UK back in 2006. We were Langhorne Slim groupies!

Tonight Malachi is with Langhorne in Pittsburgh at the . I will be there with Stephie. It will be fun.

We are all witnesses.

We all have a voice.

We need to use it.

Even if you weren’t deep into all the weather forecasts you could feel it. After a while it became, “Good God! Just SNOW already!” The heavens didn’t disappoint. But just before everything became so quiet and the night bright with snow, we went to our neighborhood cinema. The same theater I had seen my first films as a boy. The popcorn guy said a lot of people keep coming to see over and over. It was our first time. The opening shot reminded me of a famous photograph by Wynn Bullock called, “Child In The Forest” that was taken of his daughter. There were a lot of shots from above and a lot of closeups of Jesse Buckley - who you really cannot take your eyes off of - even if you were given the space. I wanted to get more inside the story than I was able to, even as it played my parenting strings. Afterwards we had two straws in a margarita before backing the car into the driveway to sit bravely for a few days of rest. It looks like the sign outside of the has decided that there is no other choice or the Oscar except for “Hamnet.”

My friend .isaly runs in Pittsburgh where students can go to take pictures in a great photo studio, shoot videos, do podcasts, and make music. Austin is a real community builder - which is a prized role in any town. Every month or so he stages “Media Day” events and always introduces me as “Pittsburgh’s Most Famous Photographer.” I am not sure what that means, but when he says that he always shines the light my way. Austin is fine if I just come and hang out, but I always want to be doing something special.
Last night I had this idea to take corrugated boxes and have friends of Austin’s paint them. We cut holes in the bottom of the boxes and had people put them over their heads. I will post photos from last night over the next fews days - but here is one of my favs. Thanks so much to . So happy they came back from the dead and are now so full of new life.
Yesterday was an incredibly special day. It almost felt like I had my fortune told when put me through a brand defining exercise in the afternoon and despite the fact we have only recently met, totally nailed what I do in a way I have struggled to do my whole career. More on that soon. It was so amazing to talk high level on what I do, then in the evening at Club Cafe actually DO IT!
