The students we serve are so hardworking and we are blessed to have wonderful, caring and child centered volunteer tutors trained by Augustine Literacy Project.
"Reading is so important and poor kids have the deck stacked against them," says Cassedy, explaining her new commitment to volunteer at ALP. A former social worker, Cassedy specialized in child advocacy, working at an adoption agency and later, a foster care center. "They all need tutors."

SOAR tutor Barbara Kassman (January 2018 ALP/SOAR Graduate)
"I have grand kids and they have a gazillion books, but some kids don't," said Barb Kassmann, explaining her reasons for volunteering as an ALP tutor. "And it's really important to teach kids how to read early." Kassmann, a newly retired pediatric nurse practitioner from Pittsboro, completed her ALP training last week as part of the SOAR project funded by the Chatham County Education Foundation.
