This Education Sunday - the Kill vs. No-kill movement - what does it actually mean?

We've all heard the terms. But what do they actually mean? Don't take that animal to that shelter - it's a kill shelter! Oh, this is wonderful, they're a no-kill shelter. Well actually, they're just not very accurate terms. Linked below are a post and a video (worth the watch!) which explain this far better than I could.

"Kill shelters" are typically open intake county shelters that receive funding from the state and cannot turn away animals. If 25 people show up one day and surrender animals, they must take in those animals. 25 animals into an already full shelter means room must be made. Animals that may be a little ill, have behavior challenges, or have just been there too long are the ones who are euthanized to make space. It's unfortunately a numbers game. Space and money are not unlimited resources.

"No-kill" shelters are typically county or semi-private shelters that have managed intake policies - appointments must be made to surrender animals, they have limited hours they are open, or animals are left as strays to fend for themselves. Rescues also kind of fall into this category as they can choose what they take in. It all comes down to 'live release rate'. If 90% of animals leave the facility alive, they can get that 'no kill' label.

If you didn't know, you're not even close to alone. These terms were designed to simplify complex topics and are now used to influence emotions. Bottom line - it's not nearly as simple as it seems.

Please - educate others as much as you can and spay and neuter and support spay and neuter programs financially if you are able. We can all do a small part. Be curious, not judgmental.
