⚠️ HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO WATCH FOR (HEAT EXHAUSTION/STROKE) AND HOW TO AID SOMEONE AFFECTED! ⚠️

Early Warning Signs (Heat Exhaustion Stage)Before full-blown heat stroke occurs, the body will exhibit clear "check engine" signs:

Generalized throbbing headache Dizziness, lightheadedness, or uneven footing

Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetiteHeavy, intense sweating

Muscle cramps and spasms in the legs, arms, or abdomen

Extreme fatigue, lethargy, and weakness

Fast heart rate and rapid, shallow breathing

Critical Red Flags (Transition to Heat Stroke)According to the ⁠Mayo Clinic and the ⁠CDC, a person has crossed the line into heat stroke when they develop neurological changes and a dangerously high body temperature:

Altered mental state: Confusion, slurred speech, agitation, irritability, or delirium

A core body temperature reaching 104°F (40°C) or higher

Altered sweating patterns: Skin may suddenly become hot and completely dry. (Note: If brought on by strenuous exercise, they may still sweat profusely).

Fainting or loss of consciousness

Seizures or convulsions

Immediate First Aid Measures. If you or someone else is showing early signs, take immediate action to cool down:

Move to a cooler area: Find shade or an air-conditioned room immediately.

Call 911: If you notice confusion, slurred speech, or vomiting, treat it as a medical emergency.

Cool the skin: Apply cool, wet cloths, spray with water, or place ice packs on the neck, armpits, and groin.

Hydrate safely: Sip cool water or an electrolyte drink, but do not give fluids if the person is vomiting or losing consciousness.

Heat advisories and warnings are in place from Hot Springs to Milbank SD. Drink plenty of water and electrolytes stay in shaded and wear sunscreen and know the early signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.

* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 105
each afternoon.

* WHERE...Campbell, Corson, Dewey, Potter, and Walworth Counties.

* WHEN...Until 7 PM CDT /6 PM MDT/ Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during
extreme heat and high humidity events.

A confirmed tornado of ef-1 intensity went through huron sd on July 2nd 2026. I rode it out in my jeep and it was probably one of the scariest experiences next to sitting in a derecho. While the damage path of the tornado was only 75 yards wide, what explains the wider damage across town was the straight line winds that followed when the storm "exhaled" some of its energy as the multiple cells converged into a line of storms. Think of it as taking a long deep breath of air and letting it all out at once. Thankfully no one was hurt in this storm! If you have any pictures or videos as the storm was rolling in I would love to see them! I will post some of mine in the comments.
