Fat Joe’s powerful story of single fatherhood began in 1990 when his firstborn son, Joey, was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth. As Fat Joe recounted on the Club Shay Shay podcast, the child’s biological mother felt unable to handle the diagnosis and immediately advocated for adoption. Fat Joe and his own mother fiercely refused, choosing instead to bring the newborn home and raise him as a family, prompting the biological mother to walk away from their lives permanently.

Stepping up as a 19-year-old single father in the Bronx, the rising hip-hop icon relied heavily on the support of his parents to balance 24/7 childcare with his blooming music career. Years later, Joey was also diagnosed with autism, but Fat Joe has continually shielded his son from the public spotlight while proudly celebrating him as an “angel” and the ultimate “Don of the family”.
