Depending on the material, different relief and rake angles are needed for the critical faces of lathe cutters. In general, the harder the material being sharpened, the smaller the rake angles. The softest materials have the greatest angles.

Feed rate and cutting ability can be improved by upgrading the cutting tools used for boring. For example, a twin bore allows doubling of the feed rate and removes almost four times more metal during the process.
