In 1981, the all-female American pop rock group The Bangles was founded in Los Angeles. They are well-known for their 1980s hit songs, which helped them become one of the decade's most popular pop rock acts. The band's greatest commercial hits were the Prince-penned song "Manic Monday" (1986), the internationally popular "Walk Like an Egyptian" (1986), and a rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" (1987), which was used in the movie Less Than Zero.

One of their defining songs, the ballad "Eternal Flame" (1989), topped the charts in multiple countries and became a huge hit. "In Your Room" (1988) and "If She Knew What She Wants" (1986) were two more hits.
