Do CO₂ Beverage Pumps Require Venting? What the Code Says for AZ.

Do CO₂ Beverage Pumps Need Venting?

What Arizona Businesses Should Know About CO₂ Fire Code Compliance

If you’re setting up a CO₂ system for a restaurant, brewery, fast food chain, or retail store in Arizona, don’t overlook this often-misunderstood requirement: venting the CO₂ beverage pump or pressure regulator.

A common question we receive is:
“If the CO₂ tank is outdoors, do we still need to vent the pump?”

The answer is: yes—in most cases, a dedicated relief vent is required.

🔍 What Fire Code Says About Pump Venting

Under the International Fire Code (IFC) and NFPA 55, components like booster pumps and secondary pressure regulators must be equipped with relief vents that discharge safely to the outside of the building.

These vent lines are not optional—they are required by code to protect occupants and first responders from accidental CO₂ discharge indoors.

Even when the bulk tank is outdoors, if any relief devices (like a pump or regulator) are located inside, those components must be properly vented to an exterior location.

🚫 Venting ≠ Ventilation

It’s important to distinguish:
Mechanical ventilation (fans or exhaust systems) is typically only required when the storage tank is inside the building
Relief venting is required any time an indoor component has a discharge port, regardless of where the tank is located

Many fail inspections by missing this detail.

🛠 We Route All Vents to AHJ-Approved Locations

Because every city and county has different enforcement policies, Global Systems United works directly with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to ensure your system is routed and installed to an approved discharge location.

We take care of the:
- Design and installation
- Vent line routing to approved exterior points
- Permits and code compliance
- AHJ coordination for inspections

⚠️ Why You Shouldn’t DIY CO₂ Relief Venting

Improper venting can result in:
- Dangerous CO₂ accumulation indoors
- Failed inspections or delays
- Fines or operational shutdowns
- Liability exposure for the business

Let our team design and install a fully code-compliant system that passes inspection the first time—no guesswork, no rework.

5 Reasons CO2 Monitoring is Critical for Restaurant Safety

Running a successful restaurant goes beyond great food and excellent service—it also means keeping employees and guests safe at all times. One often overlooked safety measure is carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring. Here are five reasons every restaurant should make CO2 monitoring a priority:

Protect Your Team’s Health
Elevated CO2 levels can lead to headaches, fatigue, and even loss of consciousness. A reliable CO2 detection system alerts your staff to unsafe conditions before they become serious.

Ensure Compliance with Local Codes
Many cities and counties now require CO2 monitoring in restaurants and commercial kitchens. Installing approved sensors helps you avoid fines and inspection issues.

Prevent Equipment Malfunctions
Leaks or improper ventilation from beverage dispensing systems can quickly raise CO2 concentrations. Monitoring gives you an early warning so you can address problems before they interrupt operations.

Enhance Customer Confidence
When customers see your commitment to safety, it builds trust. Posting visible signs that CO2 levels are actively monitored shows guests you care about their well-being.

Reduce Liability
In the event of an incident, having documented CO2 monitoring can demonstrate your due diligence and reduce potential liability.

Final Thoughts

CO2 monitoring isn’t just a compliance checkbox—it’s an investment in the health and safety of your employees and guests. If your restaurant doesn’t yet have a CO2 monitoring system in place, or if you’re unsure whether your existing equipment meets code, contact us today for a free assessment.
