MLB Organization’s Wrong Priority

I was recently a featured speaker at a fundraising event. The keynote speaker was a prominent baseball writer and sports network insider who appears to completely “sell out” to analytics.

I am a big fan of analytics in baseball as well as other sports. However analytics in certain areas of the game can become useless if strong brain-body coherence is not occurring for the player.

Good brain-body coherence is NOT a byproduct of a strong intellect which is certainly the strength of any statistical analyst working for an MLB organization. These are very intelligent, creative people. Owners, general managers and some, but who knows how many managers are putting a lot of faith in analysts. I believe baseball is at the point where analysts need to have the flexibility to understand brain-body coherence. There must be a balance.

As long as teams are making it their priority to have players who match certain analytics, they will continue to come up short in establishing a sustainable model of success while paying a lot of money to players on the Injured List. This year alone, teams paid over $968 million to 687 players on the IL. This was the most in any year except for 2018 when just over a billion was paid to injured players.

Strong brain-body coherence sets the stage to allow for fluid dynamic motion which reduces strain on muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Numbers don’t lie, however when pressure increases in a game, it’s the player with strong brain-body coherence that will have the best chance to succeed in the moment and over the long term, while having
the best chance of avoiding soft tissue injuries.

Humans are not spit out of a computer. They are developed from the inside out. Most MLB teams appear to be continuing to subscribe to the former by chasing numbers instead of making brain-body coherence the priority.

Join Buddy Biancalana and Bill Laskey on KNBR in San Francisco following today’s Giant-Dodger game. They will be discussing the only mental training program scientifically proven to enhance performance and expedite development. I wonder if the Giants might be ready for it?
