Marcue has been at the shelter twice this year. He first arrived in May after his owner no longer had enough space to keep him, but was reclaimed about two weeks later. Unfortunately, just a month after returning home, he was surrendered again for the same reason.

In his previous home, Marcue was described as a relaxed, playful, loving, and affectionate cat who enjoyed toys, scratching posts, being groomed and petted, and curling up on the couch or bed for snuggles. At the shelter, however, he has struggled significantly with the stress of the environment. During both stays, he has displayed fearful, defensive behaviors when approached in his kennel, including hissing, growling, lunging, and swatting.

The stark contrast between Marcue's behavior at home and in the shelter suggests that the shelter environment is having a profound impact on him. He is looking for a rescue partner that can provide a quiet, low-stress setting where he can decompress, build trust at his own pace, and have the opportunity to show the affectionate personality his owner knew so well.

BEHAVIOR NOTES:
Per staff 7/11:
Marcue's kennel is covered with a sheet, which made it difficult to get a video, as I could not remove the sheet without him lunging and reaching through the kennel bars. I initially attempted to record through a gap in the sheet. During that attempt, he was growling (at times vocalizing more like a yowl) and hissing. When I tried to get a better view of him, he gave a low growl, a prolonged hiss, and then lunged toward my phone.

I returned with my phone mounted on a tripod so my hands would not need to be as close to the kennel. At that time, Marcue was hissing, growling, and swatting at the kennel door while standing on his shelf with his front paws resting on the feral den. He then lip-licked, backed fully onto his shelf, and remained quiet for several seconds while I held my phone still.

I added a ring light and he continued hissing and growling, delivered a forceful swat toward the phone, and then continued batting at it, though with less intensity than the previous swat.

Per staff 7/9:
During my cage-side walk through, Marcue began loudly vocalizing, lunging, hissing, and swatting when going near his kennel. Behavior began prior to looking at him or interacting with him at all. Behavior continued when attempted to interact with him to get him into his feral den to allow for cleaning of the cage. Used a pole to push the feral den lid against the opening of feral den (pt inside) while he continued to hiss, lunge, and swat at the lid. Able to use shield in place of lid to slide lid into place.

Very high FAS, fractious behavior despite good owner behavior notes. Behavior noted to be similar when in shelter previously. Given this, may do better in home/experienced foster situation.

Per owner surrender notes 7/6: Energetic. Loving and loyal. Likes mouse toys, wand toys, laser pointer, balls/chase toys, cardboard boxes, and tunnels. Enjoys independent play with toys, playing with people, napping and relaxing, running around/getting zoomies, scratching on posts/scratch pads, snuggling/being a lap cat, being groomed or brushed, being petted, hiding. Uses scratching posts, cat trees, and cardboard scratchers. Play bites, scratches on furniture/carpets. Nervous around strangers and dogs. Has not been around children or other cats. A little bit interested in wildlife. His ideal home would be a house with carpet and children to play with and he likes to watch you cook in the kitchen. He responds to come here. The best things about him are he is loyal and affectionate.

Per staff 5/29: Marcue hissed when I approached his kennel.

Per staff 5/23: Marcue had a sheet over most of his kennel and hissed when I went to take a picture of him.

Per staff 5/28: Might not be taking meds in food. Allowed me to approach and softly pet hind end, ears went back and started hissing, raised paw to swat.

Per staff 5/23: Setting to eval due to behavior, extreme FAS, screams when kennel is approached.

Per owner surrender notes 5/22: Relaxed, playful, loving, active. Litter trained. Medium energy. No behavior concerns. Knows commands. Shy with strangers. Fine with children. Don't know how he is with dogs or cats. His ideal home would be a calm, clean environment, no loud noises or arguing.

Per owner 5/17: Calm, mild, loving and playful. The best thing about him is he is affectionate. Has never bit a person or animal. No behavior concerns. He doesn't like his nails clipped.

Sweet mama Vanilla and her five kittens were found outside during a heat wave on July 7th. Thanks to the quick thinking of a good Samaritan, Vanilla and her babies were safely contained in a recycling bin for their transport to the shelter! Despite being found outdoors, Vanilla isn’t your typical street cat and seems very comfortable around people. She’s been described as a calm, gentle mother who has been easy for staff to handle, tolerating petting and routine care without any signs of aggression, and has remained a patient and attentive mother to her young ones. Vanilla’s kittens are estimated to be under two weeks old.

Sadly, this beautiful little family is in need of a helping paw for their urgent medical concerns. Mama Vanilla is suffering from a painful ulcerated mass on the plantar aspect of one of the toes on her left hind leg; this mass will require a biopsy and may need amputation. Additionally, Vanilla’s kittens are suffering from severe eye infections as well as alopecia and skin lesions that may be indicative of ringworm. Sadly, due to these medical concerns, Vanilla and her kittens must be placed with an approved rescue partner no later than 10am on Wednesday, July 15th.

MEDICAL INFORMATION

Vanilla’s initial medical exam on July 7th noted a thin body condition (weighing 6.1 lbs) and an embedded toenail with severe infection of the left hind paw. The toenail was trimmed, and Vanilla was given an antibiotic and pain medication to help her recover. Unfortunately, a medical recheck exam on 7/12 noted that “now that left hind paw infection has improved, it has become apparent that there is a discrete fleshy ulcerated mass on the plantar aspect of the left hind 5th digit. Changing status to rescue only w/ urgent promotion for expedited exit within the next 72 hours. Cat will need biopsy of mass (which may require toe amputation) and, in addition, her kittens are not thriving in shelter. They have severe eye issues and skin lesions that may be consistent with ringworm.”

Vanilla’s kittens were also examined on 7/12. It was observed that multiple kittens from the litter had “crusty regions of alopecia on tails, as well as mucoid debris and conjunctivitis OU.” A Wood’s Lamp test to look for ringworm spores was negative, but a fungal culture was taken and is pending more conclusive results. The kittens are currently receiving an antibiotic ointment for their eye infections as well.

BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION

Staff noted 7/8: “Vanilla appeared neutral when staff approached, calmly observing her surroundings. She tolerated petting and handling appropriately and did not display any signs of fear or aggression during the interaction. Overall, Vanilla remained calm and easy to work with throughout the assessment.”

Staff noted 7/7: “Mom is nice but scared, she will try and run away.”

On 7/7, Vanilla’s finder noted she was “friendly.”

Jerry Steel is a handsome two-year-old kitty who was found wandering the streets of Philly alone, and was brought to the shelter after his finder noticed a severe eye infection. Jerry has spent a month in the shelter, but unfortunately his eye issues have not resolved despite multiple courses of medication. On July 8th, Jerry was noted to have a ruptured corneal ulcer requiring urgent removal of the eye (enucleation) in order for Jerry to have a pain-free future.

Jerry has been a shy and reserved kitty during his shelter stay. While nervous, this gorgeous boy has been a very well-mannered boy for all of his medical examinations and treatments. Jerry would thrive in a quiet space where he can make a full recovery from his enucleation and come out of his shell at his own pace. In order to receive the care he needs, this sweet boy urgently requires placement with a rescue partner by Wednesday, July 15th at 10am.

MEDICAL INFORMATION

A veterinary exam on June 15th noted that Jerry Steel had a body condition score of 6/9. He was found to have conjunctivitis, with mucoid discharge noted in both eyes. He was started on an antibiotic eye ointment as well as gabapentin. He was estimated to be around two years old.

A recheck exam on 6/24 noted that while Jerry Steel had finished his seven-day course of the erythromycin ointment, he was continuing to have mild discharge from both eyes, with a possible ocular ulcer in the left eye. He was noted to have mild fluorescein eye stain in this eye. Jerry was started on a seven-day course of ofloxacin, and his courses of famciclovir and gabapentin were extended.

A veterinary recheck exam on 7/8 noted that Jerry Steel’s right eye showed focal lateral corneal opacity, but was otherwise within normal limits. However, Jerry was found to have a ruptured corneal ulcer with anterior synechiae, neovascularization, mucoid discharge, and blepharospasm in his left eye. He was noted to require enucleation (removal of the eye). He tested negative for FIV and FeLV.

BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION

On 6/15, Jerry Steel was described as “scared” by the finder.

During a 6/15 medical exam, Jerry was noted to be “scared, timid.”

A staff member noted on 6/16 that Jerry Steel was “BAR, fearful, but very tolerant of handling.”

Phat Girl ACCT-A-255332 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Phat Girl must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by THURSDAY, JULY 16TH at 10AM. Phat Girl, a beautiful 5-pound adult grey domestic shorthair, arrived at ACCT Philly on July 11, 2026, after being found outdoors. While her previous finders cared for her for four months, they were unfortunately unable to continue her care.

Phat Girl is currently in need of significant medical support. Her bloodwork indicates hyperthyroidism and mild azotemia (elevated kidney values), which may be due to an acute injury or chronic disease. A physical exam also revealed a heart murmur, muscle wasting, and moderate dental disease. Although she arrived matted and covered in urine, staff have since cleaned her up and started medication to regulate her thyroid, along with other in-house treatments.

Despite these initial steps, Phat Girl requires ongoing supportive care that we are unable to provide at our facility. We are looking for a rescue partner to give her the second chance she deserves.

Bailey ACCT-A-255437 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Bailey must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or FOSTER by THURSDAY, JULY 16TH at 10AM. Should Pine's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Bailey is a beautiful 2-year-old spayed calico who arrived at ACCT Philly on July 12, 2026. Bailey was found injured at a gas station and is currently non-weight bearing on her left hind leg. Radiographs revealed a left capital femoral physeal fracture (an injury where the "ball" of the hip joint separates from the femoral neck at the growth plate). Our veterinarian determined that she urgently requires either an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) surgery or surgical fixation of the hip.

Additionally, it was discovered that Bailey was in her third trimester of pregnancy at the time of her spay surgery. She is recovering well from that procedure and is currently on pain medication and cage rest. However, she cannot recover in the shelter and we are unable to perform her orthopedic surgery in-house due to high intake numbers.

We are looking for a rescue partner to provide her with the necessary surgery and post-operative care. Alternatively, we are seeking a foster who can coordinate her surgery off-site, manage transportation, and monitor her recovery and follow-up visits.

Despite her injuries, Bailey is incredibly sweet. Her finder described her as friendly but scared, and we are confident she will bloom with the right support.

Pine ACCT-A-251758 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Pine must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by THURSDAY, JULY 16TH at 10AM. Should Pine's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Pine, is a beautiful 4-year-old spayed female grey domestic shorthair who arrived at ACCT Philly on June 1st.

Pine was brought in by her community caregiver after sustaining an injury. She is described as friendly, cuddly, and playful, and she has previously spent time indoors. While she is a community favorite, her medical needs now require a more stable environment than our high-volume shelter can provide.

On June 2nd, Pine’s wound was cleaned, and she underwent a repair on June 7th. Unfortunately, due to the location under her right axilla (armpit), the wound dehisced nine days post-operation. While the wound is healing slowly and she remains stable with a great appetite, she may require a second wound repair. She is currently "Rescue Only" due to this injury, which requires ongoing medical monitoring and follow-up care. Additionally, Pine underwent a spay procedure after it was discovered she was in her third trimester of pregnancy at the time of intake. She has remained bright, alert, and comfortable during her recovery.

Pine has maintained an incredibly positive attitude, and we are confident she will make a wonderful indoor companion once fully healed. We currently have an interested foster through a rescue, as well as interest from her original finder regarding adoption; we are happy to share these leads with any rescue partner that can pull her.

Staff noted on 6/19: “Went to Pine’s kennel to meet her. She at first shrunk away, but the second I gave her gentle head scratches she melted. She leaned in for more pets and enjoyed head and chin scratches. The second I stopped petting her, she reached her paw out at me seeking more attention, completely melting my heart. What a sweet baby!”

Staff noted on 6/6: "Pine was quietly observing staff as they interacted with other animals in the room. When staff approached her kennel, she calmly came forward, giving a gentle stretch before approaching for attention. Pine readily accepted pets and remained relaxed throughout the interaction, displaying a very calm and gentle demeanor. She appeared comfortable with handling and sought out affection in a quiet, sweet manner. Pine's behavior during this interaction was friendly, composed, and affectionate."

BAR, eating and drinking well in care with normal eliminations. Wound repair in right axilla has completely dehisced. Skin is adhered again at the edges, and wound bed is healthy with good granulation tissue present. Wound bed is approximately 3-4cm diameter

Complete dehiscence of axillary wound repair site, healthy tissue

Plan
Axillary wounds are challenging due to high range of motion, and dehiscence is not uncommon. Tissue is currently healthy, but wound bed surface area is large and second intention healing in this location is also challenging. To remain rescue only at this time. Consider additional wound repair intervention when surgical capacity allows.

HUGE behavioral improvement from Marcue! Last week he was extremely stressed in kennel. This week, he was much more relaxed and playful! He sniffed my hand, and allowed me to pet him and play with him using the fake hand toy. He gently batted the toy, and only became a little overstimulated when I played with him a little too long. He leaned into the toy to be petted under the chin.

At that time, Marcue was hissing, growling, and swatting at the kennel door while standing on his shelf with his front paws resting on the feral den. He then lip-licked, backed fully onto his shelf, and remained quiet for several seconds while I held my phone still.

I added a ring light and he continued hissing and growling, delivered a forceful swat toward the phone, and then continued batting at it, though with less intensity than the previous swat.

Per staff 7/9:
During my cage-side walk through, Marcue began loudly vocalizing, lunging, hissing, and swatting when going near his kennel. Behavior began prior to looking at him or interacting with him at all. Behavior continued when attempted to interact with him to get him into his feral den to allow for cleaning of the cage. Used a pole to push the feral den lid against the opening of feral den (pt inside) while he continued to hiss, lunge, and swat at the lid. Able to use shield in place of lid to slide lid into place.

Very high FAS, fractious behavior despite good owner behavior notes. Behavior noted to be similar when in shelter previously. Given this, may do better in home/experienced foster situation.

Per owner surrender notes 7/6: Energetic. Loving and loyal. Likes mouse toys, wand toys, laser pointer, balls/chase toys, cardboard boxes, and tunnels. Enjoys independent play with toys, playing with people, napping and relaxing, running around/getting zoomies, scratching on posts/scratch pads, snuggling/being a lap cat, being groomed or brushed, being petted, hiding. Uses scratching posts, cat trees, and cardboard scratchers. Play bites, scratches on furniture/carpets. Nervous around strangers and dogs. Has not been around children or other cats. A little bit interested in wildlife. His ideal home would be a house with carpet and children to play with and he likes to watch you cook in the kitchen. He responds to come here. The best things about him are he is loyal and affectionate.

Per staff 5/29: Marcue hissed when I approached his kennel.

Per staff 5/23: Marcue had a sheet over most of his kennel and hissed when I went to take a picture of him.

Per staff 5/28: Might not be taking meds in food. Allowed me to approach and softly pet hind end, ears went back and started hissing, raised paw to swat.

Per staff 5/23: Setting to eval due to behavior, extreme FAS, screams when kennel is approached.

Per owner surrender notes 5/22: Relaxed, playful, loving, active. Litter trained. Medium energy. No behavior concerns. Knows commands. Shy with strangers. Fine with children. Don't know how he is with dogs or cats. His ideal home would be a calm, clean environment, no loud noises or arguing.

Per owner 5/17: Calm, mild, loving and playful. The best thing about him is he is affectionate. Has never bit a person or animal. No behavior concerns. He doesn't like his nails clipped.
