American artist Edward McHugh’s abstract paintings rely on the use of mixed media and subtle textural fluctuations to create a dynamic sense of tension. Often, two disparate colors are butted against each other, while varying levels of transparency invite the viewer into shifting visual depths. McHugh frequently contrasts textures by adding a layer of clear resin over a painted surface, amplifying the interplay between depth and flatness. His decades-long practice has been exhibited nationally, including at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and the Center on Contemporary Art in Seattle.

Thank you to for featuring “Interstice: Thresholds Carved with Light and Time”, our current solo exhibition by Marcus Vinícius De Paula.
The feature highlights De Paula’s luminous stone sculptures, which merge ancient materials with contemporary light to explore humanity’s place within geological and cosmic time. We’re grateful to the Surface team for helping share this remarkable exhibition.

“Interstice” is on view at Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia through August 14.

On view at 200 Lex! Richard Haining’s “STACKED 10 Bulb Chandelier” transforms salvaged walnut into a luminous architectural presence. At 60 inches in diameter, this monumental work expands upon the artist’s celebrated 36-inch chandelier, merging influences from Art Nouveau and the American Studio Craft movement through Haining’s distinctly contemporary approach to design.

Crafted from thousands of individually stacked pieces of reclaimed wood sourced from New York City’s discarded architectural and industrial landscape, the chandelier embodies a process of renewal. Built layer by layer like a coiled ceramic vessel or an analog 3D print, each form is shaped by hand before being refined into a seamless surface. The subtle shifts in color and grain reveal the material’s previous life—preserving a visible record of time, place, and transformation within a singular sculptural object.
