This past year has been incredibly trying for our little family and ultimately led us to make the hardest decisions we’ve ever had to make. We are sad to share this news but also so grateful for everything that this little Jewish bakery business has brought to our lives; joy, challenge, community, growth, creativity and so, so many great memories with so many great people!
Thank you to everyone who walked through our doors, supported us, believed in us, and became part of our story! You have contributed to our lives in ways you can’t imagine.

We’re hitting pause for the next three days to take care of what matters most—our people, our health, and our future.
Running a bakery is a labor of love. Just like dough needs time to rest in order to rise, we’re prioritizing rest, reflection, and recharging so that when we reopen, we do so with renewed energy, sharper focus, and a few exciting improvements to our menu and spaces.
We know that great things take time and intention—and we’re committed to building an even better Essen for our team and our communities. We have some big ideas we’re working on, and we can’t wait to share them with you soon.

9 Years of Essen! 🎉
We’re officially stepping into our first decade at Essen Bakery — and what a ride it’s been.
It all began 9 years ago in a tiny 650 sq ft shared space on East Passyunk — just a dream, some chutzpah, and not much else. Today, while we are only “rolling in dough” in the literal sense 😂, we do have the bakery space of our dreams, a growing team, and a whole lot of heart.
None of this would be possible without YOU — our amazing community of friends, family, and loyal customers who’ve been with us through every babka, bagel, and bump in the road. Thank you for showing up, cheering us on, and making this dream real.
🎈 Come celebrate with us the whole weekend at either North or South!
Enjoy a $9 special: Lox & Schmear or Whitefish Bagel + a hot cup of coffee. Because what’s a party without good food?
