Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us!

This past Sunday, the Church celebrated the great Solemnity of Pentecost — often called the “Birthday of the Church.”

But what exactly happened on Pentecost?

After Jesus ascended into Heaven, the Apostles gathered together in prayer with the Blessed Virgin Mary, waiting for the Advocate that Jesus promised would come to them.

In the Acts of the Apostles we read:

“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.”
— Acts 2:2

Then:

“There appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.”
— Acts 2:3–4

At that moment, fearful disciples became bold evangelizers. Peter, who once denied Jesus, now stood before crowds proclaiming the Gospel fearlessly. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church was born and sent forth into the world.

And that same Holy Spirit is still alive and active today.

The Holy Spirit strengthens us, guides us, comforts us, convicts us, and calls us to deeper holiness. The Spirit speaks not only through dramatic moments, but often through quiet nudges in our hearts.

So perhaps this Pentecost we should ask ourselves:

✨ What is the Holy Spirit leading me to do?

To become a better friend?
A more loving spouse?
To attend Mass EVERY Sunday?
To finally return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
To gossip less and pray more?
To spend more time in devotion before the Blessed Sacrament?
To pick up the Rosary again?
To forgive?
To serve?
To trust God more deeply?

The Holy Spirit does not force Himself upon us. He invites. He leads. He transforms.

Pentecost reminds us that God is not finished with us yet. The same Spirit that descended upon the Apostles desires to renew our hearts today.

May we quiet the noise of the world long enough to hear His voice.

And once we hear Him…

May we have the courage to follow where He leads.
