Centennial Memorial, Please Touch

Memorial Hall was the centerpiece for fine arts during the celebration of America's 100th birthday, the 1876 Centennial Exposition. It was built to showcase art from around the world and symbolized cultural progress.
After the fair, Memorial Hall became the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art—the forerunner of both the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the University of the Arts. As the Philadelphia Museum of Art moved to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in the 1920s, Memorial Hall began to decline in use. Over time, it served a variety of purposes.
In the early 2000s, after years of disrepair, Memorial Hall underwent a major $85 million renovation to house the Please Touch Museum, which opened there in 2008. The restoration preserved the historic architecture while transforming the interior into a playful and modern children’s museum..
