Today is the anniversary of the opening of one of Philly's favorite spots: the Philadelphia zoo! Today the honor of our West Philly Firsts spotlight goes to the zoo to honor this special occasion!
It's not just special because it's in Philly, it's special because it is the first proper zoo in America! It's origins go back to 1859, when it was first chartered.

Today we'd like to spotlight the first black-owned business in Reading Terminal Market: Sweet T's Bakery!
For almost 150 years, Reading Terminal Market has served the people of Philadelphia. It's one of our most treasured landmarks and a tourist attraction that deserves the attention.
Sweet T's Bakery also made its mark on history by being the first black-owned business to call reading Terminal Market its home. They offer a variety of baked treats, including miniature pies! UrbnSEEK recently featured some of these pastries at a past BLKTea and they were a hit! Go to Reading Terminal Market and give a try!

Today in our celebration of Black History Month and our West Philly Firsts series, our focus is on a truly exceptional individual: Queen Mother Falaka Fattah. Born in Philadelphia and educated at Temple University, she has been a community advocate since the 1960s. One of her many achievements is founding the House of Umoja. The House of Umoja is a family-centered organization focused on youth empowerment. It also is dedicated to reducing gang activity and gang violence.
