Independence Day | Designing with Freedom in Mind

This Fourth of July, we reflect on one of our core values that shapes everything we make: freedom.

The freedom to plan how a space is used to serve a purpose one day, and then another in ten years.

The freedom to experience the journey of a building through its history and its future when you walk through each and every room.

The freedom from constraint - to be able to express your desires and needs in every detail that you choose to enhance your day-to-day.

For more than two decades, we've designed spaces that free people to live, gather, and work together. Good design, like independence, expands what is possible.

From all of us at Millan Architects, we wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Preservation in Progress | Sarah Furnace

Step inside the Barn with Matt for a closer look at its re-erected timber frame. The interior siding has been stained to contrast with the natural timbers, keeping the historic frame at the center of the experience while adding depth and warmth.

On the exterior, structural insulated panels (SIPs) and weather barriers are now being installed, enclosing and insulating the volume, and preparing it for the phases ahead.

The result is a beautiful space that holds structure and material in clear expression, bridging craft and history in equal measure.

We look forward to continuing to share our progress at Sarah Furnace with you all!

25th Anniversary Project Reflection | Rittenhouse Rowhouse Renovation, Philadelphia

How do you honor a home's history while making it work for the way people live now?

It's a question at the center of our work at Millan Architects, and this townhouse renovation just off Rittenhouse Square stands out among our portfolio as a defining example of how we capture the balance of maintaining history while updating the space for modern living.

Our work on this project amounted to a full gut renovation paired with significant systems upgrades, including plumbing that had gone largely untouched for generations. Our goal was to preserve the character of the home while reintroducing the light and flow that decades of alterations had slowly closed off.

At the heart of the design was a response to the home's orientation. The south-facing front opened toward the street with generous ceiling heights and strong daylight, while the shallow, upper floor carried a softer north light.

By connecting these levels and opening up the plan, we balanced daylight and restored a sense of continuity throughout the space.

Nearly every bathroom was reconfigured. The kitchen became a cooking, dining, and gathering space, opening onto an exterior dining terrace, while a new roof deck claimed usable outdoor space within a dense urban block.

The final result honors the home's history while updating the space to be compatible with a modern owner. Residential design can update a historic home without erasing what makes it unique - and that's one of the things that what we do best at Millan Architects.
