The building's name, The Penn Reading, was chosen to reflect the neighborhood's rich history which was once an essential location to the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company (P&R). P&R’s service traveled directly through Lehigh Ave. and maintained several rail depots and warehouses in the area, one of which was directly behind the site of this project. The noticeable curvature of the building and retail storefront, designed by , serves as an homage to the railway roundhouse once located at the Port Richmond terminal.
