U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia Hit in Iranian Drone Attack
The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was struck by two drones in what Saudi officials described as a limited but alarming attack amid Iran’s widening retaliation campaign. According to a Saudi Defense Ministry spokesperson, the drones caused a small fire and minor structural damage to the embassy compound, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. The incident marks a significant escalation as Tehran expands its response to recent U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.
The U.S. Mission to Saudi Arabia issued an immediate “shelter in place” alert for Americans in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran, urging citizens to avoid the embassy and limit movement. The State Department also advised Americans across several Middle Eastern countries to depart due to heightened security risks. Non-essential travel to military installations in the region has been suspended as tensions intensify.
The embassy strike comes as Iran launches a wave of counterattacks across the Middle East, targeting U.S. allies with drones and ballistic missiles. Air defense systems in Israel and the United Arab Emirates were activated overnight, intercepting incoming threats. U.S. Central Command said American forces continue to strike Iranian military facilities, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command centers, as part of ongoing operations.
With embassies on alert and regional airspace disrupted, the attack on the diplomatic mission underscores the growing volatility of the conflict. As both sides continue military operations, fears are mounting that the crisis could spiral into a broader regional war involving multiple U.S. partners.
