Here’s another flashback memory. This is how it all started for me. If I remember right, this image of John Tomac was shot in about 1996’ish. Traveling to World Cup and Norba mountain bike races was a ton o’ fun most of the time, yet exhausting. Climbing up and down mountain peaks with backpacks full of gear to find the best vantage point, then racing back to the finish line just in time to grab that winning shot, or sitting on the inside turn of the dual slalom course (I can’t believe we were allowed to do that), was exhilarating most days. If we were lucky enough, we’d have an assignment from Velo News or another cycling magazine to help cover costs. But what most often happened was we would shoot on “spec”, then we’d all race to the photo lab Monday morning to develop film (yes, we were shooting film back then). We would offer our images to bicycle & outdoor magazines and bicycle related companies for licensing for race win ads, catalogs, and other marketing related projects. I had great times and met some very good friends that I still stay in touch with and . It was good times, but as the industry was changing, with a newborn at home and a mortgage to pay, I had to make a change. Thus my life as a studio photographer began to take shape. No regrets, but I do sometimes wonder what sort of projects I could have worked on had I remained an outdoor adventure/sports photographer.

More new work for Hoka Shoes. Thanks to our fantastic stylists for getting these shoes to perform their aerial acrobatics. It was another fun shoot!
