Our oldest cow finally had her calf last week. We call her The Black & White Cow, for obvious reasons. Best we can figure, this cow is probably about 15 years old. She had her calf about a month and a half after everybody else, which is out of the norm for her.
Our best guess is that the late calf could be due to one of two things. 1.) She is just old and may have taken a couple of heat cycles to take. Or, 2.), We had a day last summer when we were out of town that a wire lifter failed and the cows didn’t get access to the grass we had designated for them to eat while we were away. We wonder if that nutritional deficit was too much demand on her old system and caused her to slough off an embryo; that would have required her to get bred again and would explain the delay in calving.
Regardless, in the end, she had a nice bull calf. He’s one we’ll keep an eye on as a potential herd bull in the future!

Y’all may have noticed that we’ve been a little quieter than usual here on socials the last two weeks… This little bundle of joy is why!
That’s right, Baby Bios is here!👶🏻 She came about three weeks before we were expecting her, but she’s healthy and happy, and we couldn’t be more thankful.
We’ve been enjoying the last two weeks with Andrew home from his day job, very much in the “newborn bubble,” adjusting to being a family of three. Order fulfillment and retailer restocks are taking us a little longer than we’d usually prefer, and we’re so thankful for our customers’ patience and support during this time!🫶🏼
P.S. Email newsletter subscribers got this news first… You, too, can get Bios Ranch updates before the rest of the world (and email-exclusive deals!) by subscribing to our monthly newsletter at eatbios.com.📧
