The little emus are growing like mad. They love it when I bring grape vines to nibble. Al & I spend a fair bit of time with them. They have their own stall in the stable & are also allowed out to roam around in the stable. They are letting us wrap our arms around them & they seek us out when we are working in different areas of the stable. Before too much longer they’ll be allowed in a smaller fenced area outside but for now they enjoy lots of light through the stable windows. Our goal is for them to be hands on & manageable rather than just novelties ranging around in a pasture. That takes time but the emus we had many years ago did beautifully in that regard & we’re working for the same with these two little clowns.

I was hurrying in from gathering eggs as there was a storm moving in but I had to stop when I saw these two beautiful black rat snakes. They almost rolled right over my foot while I was videoing them. May & June tend to be mating season so I guess they’re on schedule. Hope there are lots of fertile eggs to add to the population here. These calm, non-venomous snakes are great contributors in terms of farm rodent control. We lose eggs from the nest boxes to them but it is a small price to pay. And I just enjoy seeing them!
