I call this piece the "Whale Tail". It is made from a piece of dead Manzanita wood. Manzanita is an extremely hard wood and is protected. It grows at 4500 - 5500 feet above sea level (I live at 5000 feet). You can only harvest Manzanita (in AZ) from private property. This was the base of a large Manzanita tree that had died. It stands 15" tall and is ~14" from side to side and front to back. It would make a very nice centerpiece for a buffet or mantle.
