Last Saturday I had the honor of attending the "Race & Place" tour of Pasadena put on by the Center for Restorative Justice, along with Albert Wandui, Hannah Manetsch, and Rachel Fu. It's hard to express how powerful it was to hear first-hand stories, including a man whose house and entire vibrant neighborhood of Black and Japanese people was razed to build the 210 freeway, or how key founders of Caltech affirmed eugenics (sterilizing primary people of color, as young as 12 years old), or how poorly Mack Robinson was treated when he returned to Pasadena after winning the 1936 Olympic silver medal. Yesterday was a science/faith doubleheader - I preached on evolution and creation in the morning (missiocc.org/sermons) and last night we had our 19th Science And Faith Examined event at Caltech on "Why is the Universe Pythagorean?" with 70+ attendees and great conversations afterwards. I find that both science and Christian faith evoke deep wonder and awe.
