For 250 years before independence, practicing Catholicism was illegal in the colonies, especially Massachusetts. Priests and believers risked death for their faith, holding secret masses in basements. Religious freedom, now taken for granted, only became possible after the Declaration of Independence and the work of Bishop John Carroll.
