Property Tax Exemptions | Cook County Assessor's Office Property tax exemptions are savings that contribute to lowering a homeowner’s property tax bill. The most common is the Homeowner Exemption, which saves a Cook County property owner an average of approximately $950 dollars each year. Read about each exemption below.

The Cook County Treasurer has extended the first-installment property tax payment deadline to April 1 due to delays in mailing tax bills. This change follows significant delays in the issuance of the 2025 second-installment bills.

Cook County property tax bill payment deadline extended to April because of late billing Cook County homeowners have all been granted an extension in paying their first-installment property tax bills for 2026.

The Cook County Board of Review is reopening 24 townships for 2025 property tax appeals starting December 3 through December 12. Now is the time to file if you haven’t already.

Townships reopening include: Berwyn, Evanston, Norwood Park, River Forest, Riverside, Rogers Park, Cicero, Oak Park, Palos, and many more.
