Gulf Coast Sexual Assault Program
Some people may tell someone right away, while others may wait months or even years. Some may share every detail, while others may only share a small part of their story.
There is no one-size-fits-all response to trauma, and there is no single way a survivor should disclose their experience. Understanding that every survivor's journey is different can help us respond with greater patience, compassion, and support when someone chooses to come forward.
Advocates are often one of the first sources of support a survivor connects with after experiencing sexual violence, providing guidance, resources, and a compassionate presence during a difficult time.
Whether helping someone understand their options, access services, navigate systems, or simply offering emotional support, advocates are there to walk alongside survivors and ensure they do not have to face the journey alone. Their role is centered on empowerment, support, and meeting survivors where they are.

One of the most important ways we can support survivors is by challenging misinformation with facts.
False reports of sexual assault are rare. Educating ourselves on the realities of sexual violence helps create a culture where survivors are treated with compassion, respect, and understanding when they come forward.
