Day One:
Base camp is full of hunters and guides, all anxiously milling around waiting to head out to their respective spike-camps. Here Caden, one of the hunters glasses the hills next to the shed shrine as the morning sun crests the hillside. We spotted a black bear and 21 sheep (all ewes and me’s). The anticipation is palpable. It’s hunting season!
For you photo nerds, this starburst was a result of using a high f-stop and then positioning the camera just right to catch the morning sun peaking through a narrow gap in the antlers.

First on the list, springbok!
These pretty little guys are the lifeblood of Africa. In size and markings they reminded us of our North American pronghorn. We harvested 10 that first day. Shooting was difficult, they were skittish and we were trying to take headshots whenever possible to save the meat. The one pictured was by far the biggest, with horns measuring over 15”!
A good start to the trip.
Swipe right to see what they looked like most of the time...
