Advanced Disc Replacement
07/06/2026
Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root in the cervical spine becomes compressed or inflamed, disrupting normal nerve signaling and producing symptoms that often extend far beyond the neck.
Common causes include:
- Herniated or bulging discs: the soft inner core pushes through the outer disc wall and compresses a nearby nerve root, most common in patients under 50
- Degenerative disc disease and arthritis: disc height loss and joint changes narrow the spaces around nerve roots, which is more common in patients over 50
- Bone spurs (osteophytes): arthritic changes that further encroach on nerve pathways
- Cervical spinal stenosis: narrowing of the spinal canal or nerve exit points due to disc and joint degeneration
- Injury or trauma: whiplash, falls, or repetitive strain that damages cervical discs or accelerates degeneration
Symptoms can present as radiating arm pain, numbness or tingling in the arm or hand, muscle weakness affecting grip or fine motor control, and neck stiffness that worsens over time with movement or poor posture.
