Meet your brain! 🧠🤓

The brain is the organ inside the head that controls all bodily functions. The brain is protected by the skull.

The brain is made up of 3 major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum, and the brain stem, which connects the brain to the spinal cord. The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system.

The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and it controls thinking, learning, problem solving, emotions, memory, speech, reading, writing, and voluntary movement. The cerebellum controls fine motor movement, balance, and posture. The brain stem controls breathing, heart rate, and the nerves and muscles used to hear, see, walk, talk, eat, etc.

(Also, if you cut the brain in half, you will find several small but important structures. I will do a separate post about those later!)

The brain is composed of 60% fat, with the remaining 40% being protein, carbohydrates, and salts. It contains blood vessels and nerve cells, or neurons. The brain is often referred to as grey matter, (which is the darker, outer portion of the brain) and white matter (the lighter, inner section).

Grey matter is mostly neuron somas (round central cell bodies) and white matter is mostly axons (stems that connect neurons). Grey matter is primarily responsible for processing and interpreting information, and white matter transmits that information to other parts of the nervous system.

You can support your brain by exercising regularly, getting plenty of sleep (the glymphatic system literally washes the brain while you sleep), consuming Omega 3 fats (instead of all the omega 6s found in the typical SAD diet), and keeping your blood sugar and electrolyte levels stable. Some herbs that support the brain and nerves include: chamomile, lemon balm, passion flower, valerian, saffron, rosemary, holy basil, lion’s mane (mushrooms), and ginsing. 04/22/2024
