Briarcliff High School student intern Sinduja Narayanan, working with HVSC on a competitive grant she obtained from the Hudson River Environmental Society, studied sewage bacteria concentrations as a function of location, weather and time-of-day. She identified approximately eight illegal outpours from pipes which resulted in enterococcus values higher than 24,000! The NYSDEC standard for recreational contact is only 35. More than 600 TIMES higher than the standard. These results will be reported formally to the Village of Ossining Board of Trustees with the hope that the Village will respond by planning for rapid mitigation, and if appropriate, holding private polluters accountable.
