...This virtual workshop that 600 or more GA attended in March contains relevant information and resources. Watch it now to brush up on your knowledge and skills.
On March 22, 2023, the FAA hosted a virtual workshop for general aviation pilots titled "From the Flight Deck, GA Pilot Workshop Spring 2023." The event covered many topics directly related to general aviation pilots. The workshop also discussed promoting safe operations and the tools available to pilots.
Acting FAA Administrator Billy Nolen kicked off the workshop that was attended by more than 600 pilots. Participating in the event for our Union were NATCA’s National Safety Committee Chair John Murdock (Philadelphia ATCT, PHL) and three committee members: Aaron Katz (Phoenix TRACON, P50), Bridget Singratanakul (Dallas-Fort Worth ATCT, DFW), and Mike Taylor (Columbus ATCT, CMH).
Our NATCA members presented best practices on avoiding runway incursion, the risk and mitigations to prevent landing or departing on wrong surfaces, human performance considerations, preparing for poor weather, and preflight preparations, to name a few. The workshop is one of a series of workshops collaboratively developed and presented to different stakeholders in the aviation industry.

Brush up on your holding pattern knowledge before you fly into . You may experience heavy outbound or inbound traffic on approach into KLAL. VFR often circle one of two lakes, and controllers on the ground peel off one aircraft at a time to fly a VFR route into the airport. might issue to IFR pilots a standard or non-standard holding pattern. Know the difference between the two and remember only ATC can authorize a non-standard clearance. Consider holding patterns as incident prevention and one of the safest ways to control traffic in and out of this busy airfield.
Posted with Regram | Uretsky Aviation: We got to KLAL just as their Airshow ended, and they began releasing their departures for the day. We held over Lake Parker until they were ready to accept arrivals again.
Icing mitigation begins with proper flight planning. A Think Aviation blogger recommends VFR who encounter icing conditions take immediate action to mitigate the situation—change course and or altitude. As the blogger points out, a climb might be more effective than a descent. She explains with supporting documentation from the handbook that reads as follows: In layer type clouds, icing conditions are rarely found to be more than 5,000 feet above the freezing level, and usually two or three thousand feet thick (Chapter 10 WX).
