Union Pacific's Big Boy represented a peak in steam locomotive design and technology. Over a century's worth of design evolution and experimentation led to the monstrous 4-8-8-4 in 1941. They weighed in at 1.1 million pounds, spanned 132 ft. 9.25 in., and produced over 6000 horsepower and 135,375 lbs. of tractive effort. This was the power necessary to handle heavy mixed freights and re**er trains over the 1%+ gradients on the Wasatch Mountains and Sherman Hill. They worked in tandem with the 4-6-6-4 Challenger's, sometimes doubleheading for some serious horsepower. Big Boy was among the heaviest, strongest, and largest steam locomotives in the world. Their life was cut short in 1959 as diesel power took hold. Several remain preserved today, with the most notable of this bunch being #4014 which runs excursions to this very day!
