We've had some questions recently about why you sometimes see dogs posted wearing a muzzle.

Basket muzzles are an amazing safety tool for dogs that have struggled with different social interactions. A basket muzzle is designed where dogs can breathe and pant normally, regulate their body temperature - even eat and drink! This makes them safe for a dog to wear them on walks or during social interactions.

The dogs are taught a positive association with wearing the muzzle - just like your dog has developed a positive association with putting on their leash and gets excited when they see it.

Dogs wear muzzles for many different reasons, and many dogs wearing a muzzle are not at all dangerous or vicious. They may get nervous when strangers move too quickly, or their owner has had an incident where an off leash dog charged them and a fight occurred and the muzzle may give the owner the confidence to start going for walks again after something scary or stressful has happened.

Ultimately, a muzzled dog is a dog whose owner is being proactive about protecting their pet and the public while the dog gets the training or social exposure needed to be an amazing member of society.

Next time you see a muzzled dog out and about, give the owner some encouragement on what an amazing job they're doing. πŸ₯°

πŸ’”OUR HEARTS ARE BROKEN - AGAINπŸ’”
We can't catch a break lately, and neither can Tater Tot.

UPDATE: We have had so many comments and messages, it is hard to keep up! If you're interested in Tater Tot and live in the Central Florida area (Tater Tot is located in Orlando, FL) and do not currently have other dogs at home and are interested in adopting her please fill out an application on our website HTARFL.ORG πŸ₯°πŸ™ This is the fastest way to make sure our volunteers see your interest and can work on setting up meetings.

Some of you may already know Tater's story - she was returned by her adopter a couple of months ago after suffering a tail injury. She had her tail amputation surgery (which you can see has healed beautifully, thanks so much to everyone who donated towards it πŸ₯°).

About two weeks ago, Tater began the transition into a new adoptive home. Unfortunately, we are heartbroken to have to share that she has been returned again. :'( Her new adopter was wonderful, and is just as heartbroken as we are - but, Tater and his current dog just were not getting along at home, even though their meetings had gone so well.

Tater Tot was originally part of our rehoming program, but we've had no luck reaching her original owner to see if she could take her back until we find another adopter for Tater - so she now sits in a kennel. πŸ’”πŸ˜

We need your help! Please share, share, share Tater. She needs a foster or adopter without other pets. πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

She is two years old, housebroken, crate trained and loves, loves, loves her humans. She has always gotten along well with other dogs when seeing and meeting them out and about in public - but, we can't bear the idea of a third time being returned and Tater has never lived with other dogs before and this last attempt went so poorly - we really want to see her be the one and only, to make sure this is her forever and ever.

If you can donate towards her boarding costs, it is so, so appreciated. Money is tight, donations are way down and both Tater and Casper in full time boarding is a huge expense. πŸ™πŸ˜
