What if the behavior we judge is actually the damage, not the cause?

It's all too easy to see someone in crisis on a street corner and draw conclusions about how they got there. Many times, what we're seeing is the result of months without sleep, safety, or stability, not the reason for it.

We ask people to prove they're "ready" before we offer housing. But housing is usually what makes stability possible in the first place.

The people we see out and about are only part of the story. Every day at Samaritan Resource Center, we walk alongside neighbors most people never notice: families in their cars, seniors stretching a fixed income, working parents rotating between couches, all doing everything they can to stay invisible.

If we want to actually end homelessness, we have to see the whole picture, not just the parts that are hardest to look away from.
