The author, Joseph Campbell was a professor of Literature who studied the works of psychologists and anthropologists.

In his studies of ancient religions and mythology, he discovered what he considered the Hero’s Journey.

This is essentially a storytelling formula that uses a specific sequence of plot points to create a target effect in the audience.

After reading Joseph Campbell’s work on the Hero’s Journey - George Lucas had a major epiphany and completed the script for the original Star Wars.

The rest was history.
