Community Risk Reduction is one of the most used and least understood terms in the modern fire service.

But here is what most people miss — CRR is not just about preventing emergencies before they happen. A well-designed CRR program also shapes what happens when emergencies occur despite prevention efforts. Property losses are smaller. Recovery periods are shorter. The financial burden on residents and the community is measurably lower.

And the highest-performing CRR programs go further still — working with building departments on expedited permitting, building relationships with local insurers so claims resources are ready, and coordinating with city planning so the machinery of recovery is already in motion when it is needed.

The community that recovers in twelve months instead of thirty-six often does so because someone thought about recovery before the emergency, not after.
Prevention reduces frequency. Preparation reduces consequence. CRR does both.
