Before Alex Paulos created Paulos Personality Typology, he studied the work of Paul Ekman, an American psychologist, and pioneer in the study of emotions and their relationship to facial expressions.

Ekman and his team surprised the world when they discovered that everyone uses the same facial muscles when expressing certain kinds of emotions.

For example, when we’re truly happy we smile a real smile (also known as a Duchenne smile) that involves specific muscles that lift the corners of our mouth and another set of muscles that raise your cheeks.

It was Ekman’s work with the human face that allowed Paulos to get a glimpse of the connection between people’s faces and their inborn personalities.

After studying Ekman’s work, Paulos hypothesized that if the expression of emotions is universal (In other words, everyone expresses emotions in the same kinds of ways), then people’s inborn personalities could also be universal.

He thought that if people’s inborn personality traits were universal, then they’d be biological in nature and recognizable, just like happiness is recognized with a real smile and sadness is recognized with a frowny face.

Find out for yourself if inborn personalities are universal and discover some of the ways to recognize them.

We use our understanding of universal inborn personalities to help you with your communication patterns, relationship compatibility, issues in your business, and overall fulfillment in life.

Do you remember watching American Idol? Do you remember watching the people who sang off-key and were obviously tone deaf? The most fascinating thing was that these people actually thought they were excellent singers. They completely lacked self-awareness and insight into their singing ability - or lack thereof - which prevented them from recognizing their ineptitude. Even harsh critiques from the judges could not change their overwhelmingly positive views of their skills.

A distorted “self-concept”, or way of viewing yourself, is an image of oneself that fails to be objectively true. It can lead you to seriously under- or overestimate your own abilities. Individuals who distort the way they see themselves can unknowingly create lasting negative implications for their health and their psychological and emotional development.

According to parapsychologist Dr. Keith Harary, “Extensive research has . . . confirmed that the way in which you see yourself . . . has crucial implications for your long-term personal development and mental health.” Your self-concept has a profound impact on many aspects of your life. Along with the benefit of avoiding American Idol-esque ridicule, this is one of the reasons why it is important to see yourself without distortion.

We all know plenty of people who have unrealistic views of their own skills or behavior and don’t know it. Mounting evidence suggests that people are often poor at estimating their own skill or competence in various domains ranging from logical reasoning to sense of humor. Put another way, people often believe they are smarter, funnier, more beautiful, and more successful than they really are.

If people whose self-images are distorted are oblivious to this fact, how will they ever know? Do you have a distorted self-concept? How do you know? This kind of distortion is something you are unlikely to detect.

At InnerShift, we encourage you to learn who you are and live accordingly.
