Their Lives

In what was a moment of a lifetime for me, this bull elk decided to stare directly at the camera while I was photographing him crossing a river.

A trumpeter swan protects his territory by chasing away other swans.

The water in this particular marsh had been frozen all winter and the swans were trying to establish their breeding territories. The result was chaotic, noisy (there's a reason they're called "trumpeter" swans), and messy.
