Targeted parents of parental alienation report having experienced a variety of tactics by the alienating parent that contributed to the alienation including emotional manipulation, encouraging defiance and alliance, interrupting the time destined to spend with the targeted child, denying the targeted parent information about the child, defamation, and erasing the targeted parent from the child's life.

In severe cases of parental alienation, the child is empathic in their rejection of the targeted parent and refuses all contact.
